AUSTRALIA FIRES - THE WASHINGTON POST
An illustrated account of saving koalas, other native species after harsh fires.
"Cynthia von Buhler, a New York City author, artist, and wildlife rehabilitator, traveled to Kangaroo Island off the southern coast of Australia not long after catastrophic bush fires swept large swaths of that country, devastating the landscape and killing millions of animals, among them the country’s iconic koala bears. Von Buhler volunteered at Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary for a month and spent time with the Australian army, the RSPCA and at the Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park’s animal hospital. Throughout, she drew what she was learning and seeing there. Her drawings start by documenting the tragedy and plight of the koalas, transition to images of incipient environmental rejuvenation, and end with feeding success." - The Washington Post, April 14, 2020 (full page feature in Science/Health)
