EVIDENCE - DID NOVELISTS HELP END WWII?
TRUE ESPIONAGE, A STOLEN CORPSE, AND PULP FICTION HEROES: CYNTHIA VON BUHLER’S NEW GRAPHIC NOVEL UNCOVERS HOW AUTHORS AND OCCULTISTS HELPED DEFEAT HITLER AND WIN WWII

Mysterious deaths. Occult conspiracies. Lovecraftian horrors. The third volume in Cynthia von Buhler’s thrilling detective series, Minky Woodcock: The Girl Called Cthulhu, hits shelves July 8, 2025 – from Titan Comics’ Hard Case Crime imprint.
Set against the shadowy backdrop of WWII-era occultism, the story follows private investigator Minky Woodcock as she navigates a labyrinth of satanic cults, wartime cover-ups, and supernatural terror.
Following the enigmatic death of Harry Houdini, Minky is approached by none other than Aleister Crowley, who is desperate to clear his name in a murder case. Her investigation spirals into a much deeper conspiracy involving a missing British agent, classified wartime operations, and surreal dream-visions haunted by Lovecraftian horrors.
But this time, it’s personal. Minky is hired by the sister of Glyndwr Michael — the real-life homeless man whose corpse was used in the top-secret British deception known as Operation Mincemeat. As she investigates his disappearance, Minky uncovers a shocking web of occult forces, military secrets, and bizarre truths that were long buried by history.
Drawing from never-before-researched facts, The Girl Called Cthulhu reveals the astonishing role that mystery and thriller writers — including Ian Fleming — played in helping end WWII. With fiction weaponized for espionage, Minky must navigate a war where stories are deadly, and lies can win battles.
Fans of noir, history, and horror will find themselves entranced by von Buhler’s intricately rendered art and atmospheric storytelling. Previous volumes in the series have been praised for their bold style and fearless heroine – Minky Woodcock stands out as a modern pulp icon, now facing her strangest case yet.
Cynthia von Buhler brings a singular vision to the page, combining real-life history, occult intrigue, and gorgeously surreal visuals. From secret societies to deep-sea monstrosities, The Girl Called Cthulhu pushes the Minky Woodcock saga into thrilling new territory — all rooted in the unbelievable but true story of how fiction, deception, and the dead helped defeat the Nazis.

Cynthia von Buhler’s latest graphic novel is woven around true crime facts such as Nazi interest in Nikola Tesla’s death ray, Josephine Baker’s spy activity during WWII, and Donald Trump’s uncle’s involvement in Tesla’s mysterious death.

Set during World War II, nearly two decades after the events of the first volume, - Minky Woodcock: The Girl Who Handcuffed Houdini – this talented female detective uncovers another sinister and twisted mystery when she gets involved with world-renowned inventor Nikola Tesla, Nazi agents, and the race to command the world’s first weapon of mass destruction. Based around lesser-known facts dug up by von Buhler, fictional Minky Woodcock partners (physically and professionally) with bisexual Josephine Baker, who was a WWII spy for the French in the 1940’s, as they outwit Nazi Otto Skorzency, the greedy JP Morgan family, and government officials, such as John Trump, Donald Trump’s scientist uncle, in the race to find Tesla’s mysterious weapon of mass destruction.

The hardcover book features cover art by the legendary Robert McGinnis, poster artist for the James Bond films and Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Frank and Mary Spano (my grandparents) came to this country from Italy during the Roaring Twenties. They opened two speakeasies in the Bronx: one masquerading as a bakery, and the other one a secret nightclub. Shortly after Prohibition ended, Frank was shot and killed on the street in Manhattan. My mother was born on the same day he died. Nobody knows why Frank was shot. Nothing was known about the killer, his motive, or a trial. Mary Spano took these secrets to her grave.” – Cynthia von Buhler

This is a graphic novel memoir and introduction to the investigation which was created in conjunction with a long-running immersive play.
